Spice of Life

“Variety's the very spice of life, that gives it all its flavour.”
–William Cowper 1731-1800, English poet

A varied, balanced diet is essential to good nutrition and is accentuated by varying cooking styles and methods. Spices deliver significantly more than flavor. They contain potent phytonutrients that soothe, comfort, activate, and energize, while imparting their flavors of pungent, spicy hot, sweet, sour, savory, and salty. They also provide a wealth of protective antioxidants. Herbs, spices, and other seasonings not only add flavor and inspire kitchen creativity, they're aromatic and stimulate appetite, aid digestion, and are beneficial to circulatory, heart, and liver health. Two great examples of spices known for their health benefits are turmeric, which is a renowned liver tonic, and cayenne pepper, which is known to burn fat. The intelligent and intuitive blending of herbs and spices takes their efficacy quantum levels higher. Yet another motivator for variety is an old Chinese belief that eating a new food adds a day to one's life.

“…Best…Plant Food…”

There are over 4,000 varieties of beans worldwide that provide a remarkable diversity of foods. They come in many sizes, shapes, and colors, and each has a distinctive taste offering an abundance of nutrients. “Beans are probably the best human plant food there is,” says plant geneticist, George L. Hosfield, referring to the high protein, high fiber, low fat, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants of beans. Most cultures of the world enjoy beans as a staple in their diet, and have for thousands of years for very good reason. They deeply satisfy and nourish, and come packed with health benefits only now being appreciated. Classic seasoned beans, like EDEN organic seasoned beans, have played a significant role in shaping the cuisine of cultures the world over.
